Magento is a robust platform, and for it to work properly, the technologies and settings it requires must be configured correctly, including for the versions supported by the platform. Below is a list of technologies and server settings that are important for its operation. They are all popular and open source, which is one of the platform’s key characteristics.

Technologies for Magento 1.X

  • PHP (5.5 and 5.6);
  • HTML5;
  • CSS3 (LESS CSS pre-processor);
  • jQuery;
  • RequireJS (a library that helps load JavaScript resources on demand);
  • Zend Framework 1, Zend Framework 2, and Symfony;
  • MySQL 5.6;
  • Varnish (caching);
  • Redis (used for sessions or page caching);
  • Solr (search engine).

Required settings for Magento 1.x on your server

  • Apache 2.2 or 2.4 is recommended for the web server, although Magento also works well with Nginx 1.7;
  • PDO_MySQL-DOM, for working with databases;
  • simplexml -iconv, for XML processing;
  • mcrypt -curl, for encryption and decryption;
  • hash -SOAP (for Webservices API), also for encryption and decryption;
  • GD, for working with images;
  • PHP safe_mode must be set to "off";
  • PHP must have at least 256MB of memory available to run its scripts. In other words, the memory_limit variable must not be set below 256M;
  • It is important for the host to be able to run scheduled tasks (cronjobs);
  • URL rewriting must be configured. For Apache web servers, enabling the .htaccess file and configuring it correctly will resolve the issue. Nginx web servers require specific settings in the host configuration file;
