As Brazil’s business environment grows increasingly complex and the available numeric combinations in the current model near exhaustion, the Federal Revenue Service has announced a historic change: the creation of the **Alphanumeric CNPJ**, which will take effect **starting in July 2026** for all new registrations. The measure aims to ensure the continuity of the business registration system, strengthen the country’s digital infrastructure, and expand the scalability of the national registry of legal entities.

This article explores in depth the impacts, technical workings, transition, and strategic implications of the new alphanumeric CNPJ.

## 1. Why is the CNPJ changing?

The current numeric CNPJ model, made up of **14 digits consisting exclusively of numbers**, is close to reaching the limit of possible combinations due to the exponential growth in the number of active businesses in the country, including branches, MEIs, startups, and temporary ventures.

By adopting alphanumeric characters (numbers from 0 to 9 and letters from A to Z), the Federal Revenue Service **exponentially increases the number of possible combinations**, ensuring the system can support future decades of business registrations without the need for more drastic restructuring.

## 2. What will the new format look like?

The new **alphanumeric CNPJ format will retain its 14-character structure**, but will allow letters in any position in the blocks, except for the final check digit. The format will remain:

**AA.AAA.AAA/AAAA-DV**

Where:

- “A” represents **alphanumeric** characters (0-9 and A-Z)
- “DV” remains a **check digit** generated using the **modulo 11 method**, adapted to account for letters (converted using the ASCII table)

This change **will not affect existing CNPJs**, which will remain valid without the need for migration or re-registration.

## 3. Who will be affected?

The change **will not affect existing CNPJs**. The new model will be assigned **exclusively to new registrations starting in July 2026**, including new businesses and branches.

**As a result, the two formats will coexist:**

- Numeric (current model)
- Alphanumeric (new model)

Both will be accepted and valid in federal, state, and municipal systems.

## 4. What changes in practice?

Despite the change to the identifier, **the registration process will remain the same**. The only change will be to the structure of the number generated.

All **REDESIM** systems and other public or private platforms that use CNPJ will need to be **updated to accept both formats**.

**Important:** The Federal Revenue Service will provide routines for calculating the check digit in programming languages such as Python, Java, .NET, and others to make it easier for third-party systems to adapt.

## 5. Calculating the check digit with alphanumeric characters

The calculation method **will remain modulo 11**, with some adaptations:

1. Each letter will be converted to a decimal value using the ASCII table.
2. 48 will be subtracted from the resulting value.
3. Each value will be multiplied by a fixed weight, as in the current model.
4. The check digit is calculated as follows:
  - `dv = 11 - (sum of products % 11)`

### Example (summary):

Fictional CNPJ: `12.ABC.345/01DE-dv`

- Letter A (ASCII 65): 65 - 48 = 17
- Letter B (ASCII 66): 66 - 48 = 18
- Letter C (ASCII 67): 67 - 48 = 19
  ... and so on

The calculation is repeated for the second check digit after the first one is added.

## 6. System transition and adaptation

The Federal Revenue Service has announced that it will provide:

- **Active communication** with all levels of government.
- **Integrated updates to state and municipal systems**, including Finance Departments, City Halls, notary offices, and commercial registries.
- Technical documentation and integration manuals.

**Existing businesses** do not need to take immediate action. However, **internal systems (ERPs, CRMs, payment platforms, gateways, banks, and others)** will need to be adapted to recognize and validate the new CNPJ format starting in 2026.

## 7. Costs and obligations for businesses

Although the Federal Revenue Service will not charge a direct fee, **businesses will need to invest in updating their internal systems**, especially:

- CNPJ validation (forms, APIs, databases)
- Integration with business partners
- Issuing NF-e and other tax documents
- Branch management and accounting integration

## 8. What about branches?

Branches may also receive CNPJs with letters if they are registered after the new model is implemented. This means a business with a numeric CNPJ may have branches with **alphanumeric identifiers**.

The Federal Revenue Service will run algorithms to determine the branch number and may assign letters to the sequence number section.

## 9. Will the letters have any meaning?

No. **The letters will be assigned at random**, with no relation to the state, CNAE, legal structure, or any other business attribute.

The only purpose is to increase the number of possible combinations, without adding any information to the identifier.

## 10. What should we expect in the future?

The new alphanumeric CNPJ model represents more than a technical adaptation: it **reflects the need to modernize the national registry system** in response to business growth, the digitalization of business, and integration between public and private systems.

This change requires **proactive planning** from businesses, developers, accountants, platforms, and financial institutions.

The expectation is that **new regulations will be introduced throughout 2025**, with more detailed guidance on:

- Updated APIs
- CNPJ validation in e-commerce
- Electronic invoices
- Certificates and digital documents

The creation of the alphanumeric CNPJ is a strategic and necessary step to ensure the scalability, security, and continuity of business formalization in Brazil.

Although the change may initially seem purely structural, it has a profound impact on the technological foundation and interoperability of public and private systems.

**Businesses that act early and prepare their systems now will gain a competitive advantage and avoid operational bottlenecks in 2026.**
