For a long time, Google dominated the online search market, serving as the primary source of information for users around the world. With more than 90% of the global search market share, the company established itself as one of the internet’s giants.

However, that dominance is beginning to face challenges from new platforms like TikTok and the rise of generative artificial intelligence (AI). These new tools are not only redefining how people search for information, but also having a profound impact on the digital ecosystem.

### Google’s Algorithm: Ally or Villain?

In recent years, Google has made significant changes to its search algorithm to improve the quality of its results. The so-called "Helpful Content Update," launched in 2022, was just the beginning of a series of changes. In September 2023 and March 2024, further updates were rolled out, with Google promising that up to 45% of unoriginal, low-quality content would be removed from search results.

However, these updates, designed to fight spam and promote relevant content, had a serious side effect: small websites created by experts and independent publishers lost ground in search results. One example is *HouseFresh*, a site that published detailed reviews of air purifiers. After the September 2023 update, the site’s daily traffic dropped dramatically, from thousands of visitors to just a few hundred.

### Generative AI and its impact on website traffic

Alongside its algorithm updates, Google has also integrated generative AI into its search results, creating what it calls “AI Overviews.” Already available in the United States, this feature provides answers directly in search results, without requiring users to click links and visit external pages. Although Google says this technology will increase traffic to websites, industry data suggests otherwise.

Katie Berry, owner of the *Housewife How-Tos* website, reports that her traffic has fallen by about 70% since AI-generated summaries were introduced. David Leiter, another content creator, also saw traffic to his *World Travel Guy* website drop by 95% after Google began displaying AI answers instead of directing users to his articles.

These examples illustrate a larger problem: as AI takes the place of web pages in answers, content creators lose visibility and, as a result, revenue. Google, which traditionally sent billions of visits to publishers’ and bloggers’ websites, is now keeping even more traffic within its own ecosystem.

### Alarming Statistics: Who’s losing out?

According to data from SEMrush, an SEO analytics tool, well-known sites like *New York Magazine* and *GQ* have also felt the impact. Over the past six months, organic traffic to *New York Magazine* fell by 32%, while *GQ* saw a 26% decline. *Urban Dictionary*, a collaborative platform that defines slang and expressions, lost around 18 million page views, representing more than half of its traffic from Google. The *OprahDaily.com* portal recorded an even more dramatic drop, with traffic down 58%.

On the other hand, there are winners in this new landscape. *Reddit*, for example, saw a 126% increase in traffic from Google, benefiting directly from the algorithm updates. The platform is known for its user-generated content, where authentic discussions and opinions are highly valued.

Similarly, platforms like *Quora* and *Instagram* also saw significant traffic increases. This reflects a trend in which users seek more collaborative and authentic experiences and information, qualities these platforms offer.

### The TikTok threat: A new way to search for information

While Google faces challenges to traffic from its traditional search results, TikTok is gaining traction as a search tool, especially among younger generations. A recent study by *Gartner* found that by 2026, traffic from traditional search engines will fall by 25%, as AI systems proliferate and platforms like TikTok are used more widely.

With its visual approach and dynamic content, TikTok is changing how young people consume and search for information. The platform’s popularity among Gen Z and Millennials, combined with its ability to deliver quick, engaging results, has made it an alternative to Google’s traditional search model. TikTok’s recently introduced keyword search feature lets brands and advertisers target users more effectively, posing a direct threat to the heart of Google’s business model.

Digital advertising agency Tinuiti reported that its clients are already seeing positive results from ad campaigns based on TikTok searches. The feature has enabled several brands to reach new audiences and drive engagement, and some companies have committed to investing at least $10,000 per month to test the performance of this new form of advertising.

### AI: The new frontier of advertising

The integration of generative AI into search is also changing the advertising landscape. *Perplexity*, an AI startup backed by Jeff Bezos, is preparing to launch ads integrated into its AI-generated answers. Google, meanwhile, is already testing ads in its AI-generated summaries, which could pave the way for a new era of digital advertising.

In September 2024, *Perplexity* processed around 340 million searches, a small number compared with Google’s two trillion annual searches, but one that points to a growing trend. AI’s ability to generate personalized, interactive answers could transform the digital advertising market completely, giving brands more ways to connect directly with consumers.

### Conclusion: Who controls information?

The search ecosystem is undergoing a revolution. On one hand, Google is under pressure to stay relevant in a world where younger generations are moving to more dynamic, interactive platforms like TikTok. On the other, generative AI is transforming the very nature of search, putting the click- and ad-based monetization model at risk.

As Google tries to adapt its algorithm and integrate new technologies, independent content creators are being hurt. The centralization of information within Google itself, combined with the growing dominance of platforms like TikTok and the rise of new AI tools, puts internet diversity and the sustainability of businesses that depend on organic traffic at risk.

The question is: how will the digital market adapt to this new reality? The coming years will be crucial in determining whether Google can hold on to its top spot or whether emerging platforms like TikTok and AI solutions will forever redefine what it means to "search" the internet.
