![Spotify Engineers No Longer Write Code, AI Takes Over](https://vitaminaweb.digital/storage/blog/spotify-engenheiros-de-ponta-nao-escrevem-mais-codigo-a-ia-assumiu-ai.webp) Gustav Söderström revealed that Spotify’s top engineers haven’t written a line of code since December 2025. The reason? A powerful combination of an internal system called "Honk" and Anthropic’s AI model Claude Code, which now handles much of the code production at the streaming giant .

## Honk and Claude Code: The duo redefining development

The news, shared on an analyst call, offers a fascinating glimpse into the future of software development. Spotify hasn’t just adopted an external AI tool, it has integrated it into a robust proprietary system called Honk. This platform lets engineers describe the features and outcomes they want in natural language, and the system, powered by Claude Code, generates, tests, and deploys the necessary code. The workflow has changed dramatically:

- Before: Engineers wrote, tested, and debugged code manually.
- Now: Engineers define requirements, oversee AI-generated code, and validate the final result.

| **Component** | **Description** |
| --- | --- |
| Honk | Spotify’s internal system for orchestrating the development workflow. |
| Claude Code | Anthropic AI model specialized in code generation and understanding. |
| Engineers | Act as supervisors, architects, and validators of the process. |

According to Söderström, this approach has enabled unprecedented acceleration in the development cycle and the delivery of new products and features. The most experienced engineers can now focus on more complex problems and the system’s overall architecture, rather than spending time on repetitive coding tasks .

## The evolution of the developer’s role

Far from making developers obsolete, Spotify’s initiative points to an evolution in the role of the software engineer. The most valued skill is no longer the ability to write syntactically perfect code, but rather the ability to communicate effectively with AI, break down complex problems, and critically evaluate machine-generated code. This shift has profound implications for the industry:

1. Increased Productivity: Companies can build and iterate on products in a fraction of the time.
2. Focus on Strategy: Senior talent is freed up to work on innovation and systems design.
3. Democratizing Development: Barriers to entry for software creation can be lowered, allowing people with less coding experience to take part in the process.

Spotify’s case is not an isolated experiment, but a sign of a transformation already underway. Companies of all sizes are exploring how to integrate AI into their development workflows. The question is no longer whether AI will change programming, but how quickly and how profoundly that change will happen. Spotify, it seems, has decided to be at the forefront of this revolution.
