To advertise on ChatGPT, create an account at [ads.openai.com](http://ads.openai.com), check whether your business can use the platform, choose an objective, and build ad groups around a topic or customer need. You can have your first campaign ready in no time. The work that determines the results happens beforehand: a clear offer, the right landing page, and working measurement.

OpenAI says ChatGPT is used by more than 1.2 billion people per week and that [more than 100,000 advertisers have already run campaigns](https://openai.com/index/chatgpt-ads-expands-26-new-countries/) on the platform. This guide covers what you need to know to run your first test.

## Where the ad appears and who sees it

The ad appears below ChatGPT’s response, clearly labeled and separated from the generated text. OpenAI is also testing a visual format during image generation. According to the [Help Center](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001047-ads-in-chatgpt), ads may appear for users on the Free and Go plans.

The Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans are excluded, as are accounts identified as belonging to users under 18, temporary chats, and sensitive topics such as personal health, mental health, and politics.

Paying for an ad does not change the response. OpenAI says ads run on systems separate from the model, and advertisers cannot influence what ChatGPT says.

## Step-by-step: your first campaign

1. **Create an account.** At [ads.openai.com](http://ads.openai.com), register your business and check whether Ads Manager is available for your country and account.
2. **Review your details before completing registration.** Carefully check the country, currency, and time zone before you finish signing up.
3. **Choose an objective.** See the table below.
4. **Set your budget, campaign period, and location.** Start with a test that has a fixed duration.
5. **Build groups around customer needs.** Separate them by topic, product, or customer problem.
6. **Create your ads.** The headline, description, image, and landing page are reviewed before the ads run.
7. **Monitor and adjust.** First, look at what happens after the click, then optimize the ad.

## Which objective should you choose?

| Objective | How you pay | When to use it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Views | CPM, per thousand impressions | To introduce a new brand or offer |
| Clicks | CPC, per valid click | To drive traffic to a specific page |
| Conversions | Models optimized for the action | When conversion tracking is already reliable |

For a first test, the clicks objective is usually the easiest to evaluate. You can see how much it cost to bring someone to the page and compare their behavior with visitors from other channels.

## How much does it cost to advertise on ChatGPT?

OpenAI does not publish a pricing table. Costs depend on bids and relevance: when more than one ad is eligible, the platform considers both factors to decide which one appears first.

Since the platform is still in beta, check the minimum budget and bid benchmarks in your account before planning your spend.

OpenAI is also promoting an offer for new advertisers: R$ 450 in credit when you spend R$ 450, valid through December 31. Check the terms at [ads.openai.com](http://ads.openai.com).

## How to write for this channel

Targeting uses the context of the conversation, and advertisers can provide context suggestions. Think about real customer situations. Instead of “management software,” describe “a company with ten employees that wants to move away from spreadsheets to manage orders.”

- Create an ad group for each problem.
- Use a headline that highlights the benefit that matters in that situation.
- Send people to a page about that problem, not your homepage.
- Include the details people look for when comparing options: price, timeline, differentiators, and proof.

## How to measure results accurately

You cannot see the conversations. Reports show aggregated data, such as views and clicks. That is why measurement needs to be in place before launch.

- Add UTMs to every URL to separate this traffic in GA4.
- Set up conversions and test each one before launching the campaign.
- Compare results with paid search over the same period, using cost per lead or sale.
- Look at the share of new visitors, as well as click volume.

In October, the platform [expanded its measurement integrations](https://openai.com/index/new-chatgpt-ads-format-and-measurement/) with partners such as AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, and Adjust. Businesses already using these tools can bring their data into an environment they know.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do I need an agency to advertise on ChatGPT?

No, it is not required. You can buy ads directly through the advertising platform. An agency can help if your business lacks the time or resources to plan, measure, and adjust the test.

### Does an ad make ChatGPT recommend my brand?

No. Ads and responses are separate. Appearing in organic responses requires a different kind of work, focused on content, reputation, and presence in trusted sources.

### How long should I test?

There is no official timeframe. Set a start and end date before you begin, and decide what results would justify continuing.

## Where to start

Choose a product or service with a known margin and a good landing page. Write down the question your test needs to answer, set up measurement, and only then decide on your budget.
