Operations management requires processes that enable effective collaboration among professionals. This calls for new technologies that make it easier for employees to share and interact, wherever they may be. ## **Technology in operations management** About 10 years ago, automation software was expensive and out of reach for most organizations. Today, this technology is accessible and scalable for companies of all sizes. Before the pandemic, according to McKinsey & Company, only 18% of executives said they were interested in **increasing their investments in automation and digitization. Today, that figure has risen to 34%.** Today, technology allows many tasks to be performed automatically, freeing up time and energy for people to create and be more productive while machines do the work. Technology should not be used only to acquire customers, but also to increase employee satisfaction. Management tools that can assess what matters to the workforce can help leaders create a motivating environment. For years, public- and private-sector companies have used management systems such as Six Sigma, value stream mapping, performance management metrics, lean thinking, and others. In recent years, technology has further improved management systems, optimizing processes and building on what is already in place. ## **To innovate, you have to start** The first step in implementing new operations management processes is to assess what each team needs and what needs to be done. Old tools and processes do not need to be abandoned, but they should be evaluated. What works well can be kept, while what does not can be changed or set aside. It is important to bring together an interdisciplinary team to create new processes, with professionals from IT, HR, legal, and other key areas of management. Technology is increasingly accessible, and it takes sound judgment to use it to benefit your business. Leaders must guide their teams along new paths and lead change.
